Lament of a Stud Dog

My job is making puppies,
and I get two tries at that.
They pat me and tell me "Good Boy"
and that's the end of that.

It's half my job to give them teeth,
and toplines, fronts and other.
Remember, it's only half my job;
they also have a mother.

It's not my job to carry pups
and make them grow or nurse them.
And feed and clean and make them strong.
That's for mother and a person.

It's not my job to wean them
and feed them calcium and food.
And stack and gait and housebreak
and make them show or brood.

It's not my job to plan the breeding,
and learn what produces well;
to study pedigrees, learn what's there,
and pick out what will sell.

It's not my job to guarantee champs,
the breeder picks the pair.
To make and whelp and feed and show
and hope that champ is there.

It's not my job to be on hand
when points are given out;
the breeders, owners, dam and friends
take all the credit with a shout.

It's not my job to deliver a winner.
It's only genes I sell.
But let those puppies turn out bad,
and guess who catches HELL!!!

Klaagzang van een dekreu

Mijn taak is om pups te maken,
ik krijg daar vaak 2 kansen voor.
Ze aaien mij dan en zeggen "Braaf"
en rap mag ik er weer vandoor!

Voor het nest ben ik half verantwoordelijk,
voor tanden, ruglijn, hoekingen en zo veel meer.
Onthoud dus goed: Tis slechts half mijn taak,
kijk maar in de erfelijkheidsleer.

Tis niet mijn taak te dragen en te baren,
ik voed de pups niet op en maak ze zeker niet showklaar.
Ik mag me nergens mee bemoeien,
ga maar naar de moeder of fokker en eigenaar.

Tis niet mijn taak de dekking te plannen,
of te leren wie er goed produceert.
Om stambomen te bestuderen
en uitzoeken wat mooi combineert.

Tis niet mijn taak om kampioenen te garanderen,
de fokker kiest immers het paar.
Ik hoef niet te bevallen, te voeden en te showen,
ook dat is de taak van een ander zowaar.

Ik sta niet vooraan als mijn pup in de prijzen valt,
vaak weet ik daar niet eens wat vanaf.
Moeder en fokker krijgen dan weer alle eer,
ik vind dat eigenlijk best wel maf.

Wat mij trouwens ook telkens verbaast;
als één van mijn kinderen eens wat mankeert
men maar niet over mij raakt uitgeraasd
en ik dan in een verdomhoek word geparkeerd!

"Fokken is gokken" en "It takes Two to Tango",
drong dat nou maar door tot ieders brein.
Had iedereen maar net zoveel verstand van fokken als ik van dekken,
dan zou het binnen de kynologie veel leuker zijn!
